'en plein air' painting
Outdoor painting days at Penhurst and Herstmonceux Castle
Plein air painting is about leaving the four walls of your studio behind and experiencing painting and drawing in the landscape. The practice goes back for centuries but was truly made into an art form by the French Impressionists. Their desire to paint light and its changing, ephemeral qualities, coupled with the creation of transportable paint tubes and the box easel, allowed artists the freedom to paint “en plein air,” which is the French expression for “in the open air.”
Please note: You don't have to be an existing student to book a space. Why not bring a friend? - everyone is welcome!
Penhurst Retreat Centre
Penhurst (not to be confused with Penshurst Place) is a tiny hamlet near Battle which includes a 17th Century Jacobean Manor House and a beautiful 14th Century church. Situated in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it is just 10 miles from the coast in the Sussex High Weald. The beauty, peace and comfort of this place create an ideal setting in which to spend a relaxing day drawing and painting. Price includes all tuition, refreshments and entrance to the charming grounds of the Retreat Centre. This session is open to all but spaces are limited to 15 so please book. (see below)

Herstmonceux Castle & Grounds
The Gardens and Grounds of Herstmonceux Castle is a 300 acre estate including woodland, formal and themed gardens with the stunning castle and moat at it's centre. Dating from 1441 the beauty and peace of the estate create an ideal setting in which to spend a relaxing day drawing and painting. Price includes all tuition and entrance to the grounds. This session is open to all but spaces are limited to 20 so please book. (see below)

Time: 10.30 - 4.30 including 1 hour for lunch.
Please bring your own pack lunch which can be eaten in the grounds or you can purchase it from the Chestnuts Tea Room which has a good selection of lunches available.

What you need to bring with you.
• Light weight folding chair or upright easel • Small box or stool to rest paints and water • Water and pot • Wooden drawing board • Brushes, paints, pallet and watercolour paper pad • Sketch book and pencils • Kitchen roll • Sun hat.
Please note: There will be materials available from Paul's Mobile Shop. If the class has to be cancelled due to bad weather a re-arranged date will be made or you will be entitled to a full refund.

Please note: We are often oversubscribed so a first-come, first-served policy is adopted.
You can book by email to 4watercolourevents@gmail.com clearly stating the class you wish to attend. You will then be sent a confirmation email stating that you have a place reserved on your chosen course. You will then be asked to make payment and only then your place will be guaranteed.
